How Often Does My Chimney Need To Be Cleaned?

When it comes to chimney maintenance, there seems to be differing opinions. While the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) states that fireplaces should be cleaned when 1/8” of soot has built up, we recognize that is a tough gauge. Many of us aren’t going into our chimneys with a ruler to determine this, so that’s why we suggest you follow the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) advice of inspecting your chimney annually & cleaning when needed.

This is the safest and easiest approach. You can simply schedule an inspection and cleaning all in one with us at Chimney Sweeps, Inc.!

Why schedule a regular chimney cleaning?

The more fires you burn in your fireplace, the larger the buildup of creosote. Creosote is a chemical that is released from wood while it’s burning. Depending on the type of wood you burn, you may be releasing even more than typical; for example, pine or untreated wood causes a much quicker buildup. In large quantities, this buildup could pose a high risk of catching fire and releasing toxic chemicals into the air you breathe. This is why the CSIA doesn’t recommend letting more than an 1/8” buildup.

What does a typical chimney cleaning include?

Chimney cleanings take care of all build-up of soot and creosote in the fireplace itself, as well as in the smoke shelf, damper, flue, and chimney cap. A chimney expert will use several tools, such as special rods and brushes to clean the entire system. If there is a glaze present on the creosote buildup, cleaners may need to apply a chemical treatment to remove it more effectively. Once the dislodging of buildup is complete, HEPA vacuums are used to suck up any debris, soot, and creosote.

Many customers schedule an inspection at the same time as their cleaning so chimney experts can look at the entire system for any potential issues or other concerns at the same time. This combination process leaves you with a fresh, clean, and safe fireplace to use during the cold months.
