Chimney Rebuilding and Masonry
Among the various things that can go wrong with a chimney, serious masonry damage is one of the most concerning. Whenever the bricks and mortar begin to crumble and break, the stage is eventually being set for personal injuries, damage to the home and a chimney collapse. You'll need a professional Chimney Rebuilding and Masonry specialist to fix this.
Fortunately, Chimney Sweep Inc. of Lakeside, CA, understands why chimneys become damaged and what needs to be done to restore them to safety and efficiency. Across 30+ years, we’ve worked on countless chimneys, employing a highly trained crew with the tools required to do the job right.
What Causes Chimney Structural Damage?
Many things can lead to a chimney that’s falling apart or leaning, and we need to discover the cause or causes. The first step of a chimney rebuilding project is a conversation with you about the problem and then a thorough chimney inspection.
Chimney damage can occur because of:
- Low-quality materials or workmanship in building the chimney
- Rain moving into breaks within the bricks and mortar
- A major chimney fire or many smaller fires
- Issues with the chimney footing
- Lightning strikes, major hail storms, fierce winds, earthquakes and other weather and seismic events
- House-settling
- Old age and season after season of extreme outside temperatures
Chimney Rebuilding and Masonry Strategies
After learning why the chimney is damaged and if there is any collateral damage in the system, we can get to work resolving the problem.
Here are four solutions we often use in chimney rebuilding projects.
1. Brick Replacement
In some cases, select bricks have become damaged and need to be replaced. We’ll use high-quality new bricks and leave the chimney looking nice.
2. Re-Pointing
This process, also casually referred to as “tuckpointing,” involves removing weak and crumbled mortar between bricks and replacing it with fresh new mortar.
3. Structural Rebuilding
Whenever a chimney has suffered major damage, we’ll want to “start from scratch” and rebuild either sections or everything from the roof up. Most importantly, our masons use the very best materials for this job and bring years of hands-on experience to every project.
4. Chimney Waterproofing
Additionally, chimney waterproofing is an important service that can be performed after chimney rebuilding or repair has taken place. We use a product called water repellant, which keeps water out of porous bricks and cracks in the masonry.
Chimney waterproofing will not resolve existing damage, but it’s a great way to keep certain kinds of damage from happening in the future.
