Firebox Repair & Rebuilding
Older fireplaces often need to have their fireboxes repaired or rebuilt. When there are cracks or signs of decay inside your firebox, it’s a problem that should be addressed quickly. This is necessary to prevent major damage and possibly a catastrophic fire. We do firebox repair and rebuilding.
Chimney Sweep Inc. of Lakeside, CA, has been restoring safety to fireplaces since 1985. We know what to look for, and we know how to fix every issue we find.
Firebox Refractory Panels
What appear to be bricks lining the inside of your fireplace are actually specialized refractory panels that are joined together to form the walls of the firebox.
Ceramic refractory panels are designed to be heat-resistant and handle temperatures as high as 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. Although quite resilient, these panels can begin to show signs of aging after years of fireplace use. When the panels crack or split, the wood framing around your firebox could catch fire.
Another serious concern when firebox panels are compromised is the release of deadly carbon monoxide. This can get into the air of your home. Carbon monoxide is naturally produced during combustion. It should travel up the chimney and be released into the outside air. This doesn’t always happen when a firebox is damaged.
Age isn’t the only thing that can cause issues with refractory panels. Water leaks, which soften the panel material, are a common cause of trouble. Inferior construction and inferior materials can also lead to damage.
How We Approach Firebox Repair and Rebuilding Projects
Firstly, the most important step in any firebox project is a thorough inspection. Our crew has experience with a wide range of fireplace styles and systems, and we know how to spot signs of wear, malfunction and damage.
We’ll inspect your fireplace and then consult with you on the best way to resolve any issues we find.
When damage is severe and widespread, we’ll usually recommend replacing the panels.
Firebox Repair in Older Homes
Depending on the age of your home and fireplace, the firebox may have been built with the same type of brick and mortar that were used to build the chimney. These days, there are strict building and fire safety codes that disallow this practice.
If your firebox contains standard bricks and mortar, these materials need to be replaced with strong refractory panels. This is needed to reduce the likelihood of fire and structural damage.
